چکیده

The chiral self-discrimination of twelve molecules showing axial chirality has been studied. They included peroxides, hydrazines, carboxylic acids, amides, and allenes. The homo and heterochiral dimers of the selected compounds, that present two hydrogen bonds, have been studied by means of density functional theory ~B3LYP/6-311G**! and ab initio ~MP2/6-311G** and MP2/6-31111G**! methods. The energetic differences found for the complexes of each compound have been rationalized based on their electron density maps and the natural bond orbital analysis. In some cases, intermolecular oxygen–oxygen interactions have been found and interpreted as additional stabilizing contacts. © 2002 American Institute of Physics. @DOI: 10.1063/1.1504710#

High-Level Quantum Chemical Calculations of Ozone-Water Complexes

The structural and energetic characteristics of O3–H2O complexes have been investigated by means of B3LYP, MP2, MP4(SDTQ), CCSD(T) and QCISD(T) methods in conjunction with the AUG-cc-pVDZ and AUG-cc-pVTZ basis sets. Six conformers were found for the O3–H2O complex. Two different intermolecular interactions were expected to participate in the formation of complexes, namely conventional O∙∙∙H hyd...

Chiral discrimination by vibrational spectroscopy utilizing local modes.

Chiral discrimination of homochiral and heterochiral H-bonded complexes is a challenge for both experimentalists and computational chemists. It is demonstrated that a two-pronged approach based on far-infrared vibrational spectroscopy and the calculation of local mode frequencies facilitates the chiral discrimination of H-bonded dimers. The local H-bond stretching frequencies identify the stron...

Quininium Malates: Partial Chiral Discrimination via Diastereomeric Salt Formation

Quinine was employed as a resolving agent for racemic malic acid. The resultant product was a quininium salt containing 75 % of the D-malate anion. Quinine was also crystallized with pure Land D-malic acids and the structures of the resulting diastereomeric salts were elucidated. The crystal packings were analyzed in terms of their non-bonded interactions and the conformation of the quinine, wh...

H2XP:OH2 Complexes: Hydrogen vs. Pnicogen Bonds

A search of the Cambridge Structural Database (CSD) was carried out for phosphine-water and arsine-water complexes in which water is either the proton donor in hydrogen-bonded complexes, or the electron-pair donor in pnicogen-bonded complexes. The range of experimental P-O distances in the phosphine complexes is consistent with the results of ab initio MP2/aug’-cc-pVTZ calculations carried out ...

Mirror symmetry breaking in cubic phases and isotropic liquids driven by hydrogen bonding.

Achiral supramolecular hydrogen bonded complexes between rod-like 4-(4-alkoxyphenylazo)pyridines and a taper shaped 4-substituted benzoic acid form achiral (Ia3[combining macron]d) and chiral "Im3[combining macron]m-type" bicontinuous cubic (I432) phases and a chiral isotropic liquid mesophase (Iso1[*]). The chiral phases, resulting from spontaneous mirror symmetry breaking, represent conglomer...
